What is it?Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning. Acupuncture can involve inserting needles, or applying heat or electrical stimulation at precise acupuncture points. What Can Acupuncture Do?While Acupuncture can be used to prevent illness and to help treat medical conditions, it can also be part of an ongoing program to maintain good health. The World Health Organization of the United Nations has listed conditions for which it considers Acupuncture appropriate and helpful. Infections

How Does Acupuncture Work? The Classical Chinese Explanation: Channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up the flow in one part of the body and restricts it in others. The meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points; the acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions at the dams, and reestablish the regular flow through the meridians. Acupuncture treatments can therefore help the body’s internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestive absorption, and energy production activities, and in the circulation of their energy through the meridians. The Modern Scientific Explanation: Needling the Acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain or they will trigger the release of other hormones which influence the body’s own regulating system. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by Acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities and in promoting physical and emotional well-being. Does Acupuncture Really Work?YES! The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of Acupuncture for medical treatment. Moreover, over the past 2,000 years, more people have been treated with Acupuncture than with any other form of medicine. A medical examination will be conducted after which the best combination of Acupuncture and/or western medical treatment will be recommended. Are the Needles Painful?Acupuncture needles are about the diameter of a human hair. They are inserted just under the skin in a way that is painless to the patient. Once needles are in place no pain is felt. Usually there is minimal or no bleeding. Are There Any Side Effects?Usually there are no side effects. However, it is common to have a sensation of deep relaxation or even mild disorientation immediately following the first one or two treatments. This feeling will pass within a short time and it is suggested that the patient not drive immediately after the first treatment. |
