Lipoprotein Particle Profile PDF Print E-mail

Who Needs the LPP™ Test?

All patients, and especially those who:

  • Have a family history of heart disease or diabetes.
  • Have been diagnosed with heart disease or diabetes.
  • Are already taking cholesterol-lowering medications.
  • Have been diagnosed with Metabolic syndrome.
  • Are overweight.
  • Have low HDL – the “good” cholesterol.
  • Have high LDL – the bad cholesterol.
  • Have high triglycerides.

Why should I know more about my cholesterol?

Cholesterol is carried throughout the body in little balls called lipoproteins. It is the lipoproteins, not the cholesterol in them, that leads to clogging of the arteries.

According to the National Cholesterol Education Program (“NCEP”) guidelines, 50 percent (50%) of people who have a heart attack have “normal” cholesterol.

Standard cholesterol testing only gives you part of the picture leaving many people with “normal” cholesterol numbers unaware that they are still at risk for a heart attack. NCEP introduced new emerging risk factors that are responsible for many individuals being at risk of cardiovascular disease. These risk factors can only be identified with advanced lipoprotein testing.

Why do I need to know about lipoprotein particles?

Research has shown that there are difference sizes of LDL and HDL particles and some are much more dangerous than others. Having a detailed Lipoprotein Particle Profile™ (“LTT™”) gives your doctor the information needed to make more effective treatment decisions to reduce your risk for heart disease and even a heart attack.

This does not have to happen to you. You should be tested and find out if you are in the 50% of people with “normal” cholesterol numbers who are at risk for cardiovascular disease.
